My other blog has more in it…

May 8, 2008 by thebicyclingguitarist

Even though WordPress is good, I think Drupal will suit my purposes better as a Content Management System for my web site. As for blogs, again WordPress is good, very good in fact, but I have had a Google account for quite some time and have been posting to the Blogger there. I possibly could maintain this WordPress blog and the Google blog AND the blogs that are to come when my web site is converted to Drupal, but that may be too much bother and also be unnecessary duplication of content.

For the blog I have been posting to the past few months, check The Bicycling Guitarist

For my web site (now on Unix servers and being converted to a Drupal version), check The Bicycling Guitarist

Hmmm, I notice a bit of repetition the last two sentences above. While you’re at it, feel free to send a check to The Bicycling Guitarist, any amount, the bigger the better!

Again, no disrespect to WordPress, but this blog here may not be posted to very much. I’ll check in once in a while and it it’s still here, will probably say something or other.

Namaste

Big changes in store for my web site

February 12, 2008 by thebicyclingguitarist

My personal web site called “The  Bicycling Guitarist” (of course) MAY be getting a redesign soon. I MAY be migrating to a Content Management System so visitors can interact more with my songs and essays by leaving comments and such.

I was just going to add a blog, and it WAS going to be WordPress, but it turns out that WordPress will not run on the Windows server configuration of my current domain host. Then I investigated Drupal and decided to convert my entire web site. Drupal is supposed to run on Windows, but I’ve been told that it is a nightmare to install it on a Windows server. So I will almost certainly be leaving my longtime domain host to move to a UNIX or LINUX server.

In the meantime, I started another blog over at Google’s blogging service since I use their webmaster tools quite a lot. I figure I’ll spread myself out a bit over the internet, and put some links to some of my favorite pages in hopes of making them easier for other people to find them in the search engines.

A natural link to put is my Favorites page, that has a dozen or so hyperlinks to what I consider to be my best work (or play). Well I don’t want to overdo it, so that’s all for now. Namaste.

Evolution is a fact!

January 22, 2008 by thebicyclingguitarist

I have many interests: science, history, philosophy, and languages to name a few. But one thing I hold fast to is truth. That is why I am so offended at the way creationists twist what scientists say to make it look like there is scientific debate over whether or not evolution happened. Evolution happens. Get over it. The debate is not IF evolution occurs, but HOW it occurs, i.e., in the details of the mechanisms involved.

I wrote a song some years ago called Evolution whose refrain is “You’re related to a monkey!”  Some years after that, 1997 to be exact, I wrote a persuasive speech called Teaching Evolution that dealt with the crisis in science education in American public schools due to ignorance of the public about this issue. Well, I got many replies to this essay over the years, so in 2007 I wrote a Reply to Christian Fundamentalists to answer the most common objections.

I still get emails from people about this subject. Sometimes I take the time to patiently explain my point of view and why I hold it. Other times I point them to other resources and tell them it is not my job to educate them.

Samples of my work

Spank the Naughty Blonde is a good rock song with amusing lyrics. This link takes you to the lyrics page, with an optional free mp3 download of a recording from a live performance at Travis Air Force Base, California in 1996.

In the Company of Eagles is a cultural analysis of Ernest K. Gann’s World War One aviation novel. The HTML code is full of span tags to indicate the language used for the proper names in the novel.
